The 15-metre mosaic of Italy has been obtained through the ortho-rectification, pan-sharpening and mosaicing of 45 Landsat 7 scenes acquired over Italy between 2000 and 2001, mostly in the spring and summer seasons, with minimal cloud cover. The objective was to produce a single image in natural colours covering the whole of Italy at a resolution of 15 metres.
The resolution was obtained by the fusion of the high-resolution panchromatic band with the three visible-light multi-spectral bands, providing a data scale of about 1:50,000. The examples show a fragment of Mosaico15 in an urban area, and the superimposition of a Istituto Geografica Militare 1:50,000 map. The colour rendition of the final product, normally complicated by the infrared response of the panchromatic band, has been improved using a proprietary Eurimage algorithm.

The product has an accuracy of 30m RMSE and was generated using the reference system UTM32/ED50; resampling is by cubic convolution.
Mosaico15 Italy is sold as three products:
This product is sold as single tiles, as shown in the image, regularly spaced at 1-degree intervals in latitude and longitude. The complete coverage uses 92 tiles.

Mosaico15 Tile is intended for users who need geo-referenced images in natural colours over a wide area, independent of administrative boundaries, and ready for use in a GIS application.
The file format for each tile is GeoTIFF with relative tfw, in a single, three-band file, delivered on CD or DVD.
A service for mosaicing adjacent files is available on request, as well as the complete Mosaico15 Italy, which can be supplied already mosaiced, using tiling specified by the client.
The Mosaico15 product is available for each of the 20 Italian regions. For each region, the rectangular image supplied covers the entire region up to approximately 2 km outside the regional border at 15 m resolution, while the rest of the image is at 150m – see figure.

The product is intended for clients with an interest in a particular region, needing a product in natural colours as a base for a GIS or other application.
The reference system is UTM32/ED50 for the regions of Abruzzo, Emilia Romagna, Friuli, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardia, Marche, Piemonte, Sardegna, Toscana, Trentino Alto Adige, Umbria, Val d’Aosta and Veneto.
The reference system is UTM33/ED50 for the regions of Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Molise, Puglia and Sicilia.
The file format for each tile is GeoTIFF with relative tfw, in a three separate files: one for each band of Blue, Green and Red, delivered on CD.
