SAR & COSMO-SkyMed Training

Three Training Courses will be available from last week of October 2011. SAR Basics introduces to the general concepts of using SAR data. SAR Advanced introduces targeted value-adding applications on top of SAR data. SAR Custom will be a custom-fit course with specific content in vertical fields (security, defense, intelligence, oil & gaz, climate change, etc)

  1. SAR Basic & COSMO-SkyMed  (2 days)
  2. SAR Advanced & COSMO-SkyMed (3 days)
  3. SAR CUSTOM

The Advanced course is a natural complement to the Basic one. It will include formal lectures by leading scientists as well as hands-on exercises. Learners will use ITT (ENVI, SARscape) software tools for the exploitation of COSMO-SkyMed SAR data.

Costs :

  1. The SAR Basic Cost is €1,500 (per student up to two students)
  2. The SAR Advanced Cost is€ 2,100 (per student up to two students)
  3. Basic + Advanced cost is €3,500 (per student up to two students)

For more than two students, price reduction is offered.

Custom course content and duration can be agreed as needed.

Modules

  1. Principles of SAR imaging, Geometry of SAR observation Physics of targets
The basic principles are illustrated in a pictorial way. Almost no formulas.
  2. Understanding SAR images
Mostly based on real example from the COSMO constellation  this module is aimed at developing photo-interpretation capabilities on SAR images, by showing most  common distortions, effects on both targets and background. Several examples compare SAR images with optical ones
  3. Introduction to the COSMO-SkyMed constellation
    Technical specifications. Operational performances.
  4. Change detection techniques and applications.
Interferometric data collection. Image coregistration. Multitemporal (MT) products and MultiTemporal Coherence (MTC) products for change detection. Basis of interpretation for MT/MTC products. How to exploit these products for mapping, thematic mapping, agriculture applications. Coherence analysis along time. The concept of “activity map”
  5. Review of SAR applications
Principles of interferometry. The phase signal information content. Definitions of coherence, illustration of IFSAR and DIFSAR processing techniques. Illustration of permanent/persistent scatterer (PS) techniques.
  6. Advanced technologies and related applications.
Application of IFSAR/DIFSAR techniques: Digital Terrain Models (DTM), land instability monitoring with DIFSAR and PS. Detection of moving targets.
  7. Maritime surveillance.
Maritime targets on COSMO images. Ships and Oil spills : automated detection and refinement. Auxiliary information extraction (e.g. wind, waves).
End to end chain from target detection to Information system integration
  8. Flood/Emergency mapping.
Flooded areas on COSMO images. Automated detection and refinement. False alarms detection (Slope effects, other artefacts, misclassified targets).
  9. Elements for planning of the COSMO constellation.
How to plan data collection for the applications described above. Large area coverage.
